San Soo Gab San
About This Spot
Stepping into San Soo Gab San, you are immediately wrapped in the warm hum of an authentic Korean barbecue spot that invites you to slow down and savor each moment. The atmosphere strikes a quiet balance between lively and intimate — the gentle crackle of real wood charcoal grilling and the soft clatter of chopsticks mingling with friendly chatter create a backdrop that feels familiar yet special. Here, the pace is unhurried, allowing conversation and fire to coalesce naturally around the table.
This is a neighborhood gem where the experience is as much about connection as it is about the food. Each table becomes a small gathering, an opportunity to share in the ritual of grilling tender, marinated meats and layering flavors through bounty-like platters of banchan. The spread of side dishes, varying in tanginess, spice, and texture, invites playful tasting and reprises the feeling of a home-cooked Korean feast.
Even if the service leans toward the understated, it’s careful and genuine, reflecting a respect for the craft rather than a push for fleeting pleasantries. The heart of the experience beats loudest in the kitchen and at the grill — where dishes like smoky galbi, hearty stews, or delicate seafood pancakes reveal themselves bite by bite, each mouthful resonating with the depth of traditional techniques.
San Soo Gab San sits comfortably on Chicago’s Western Avenue, offering a space where authenticity and flavor invite you to linger long after the last morsel is savored. It’s a place that rewards familiarity — or encourages curiosity — by serving not just Korean barbecue, but a quietly joyful shared moment, plate by plate.

Update 8/9 this place is the best Korean food in Chicago. Those complaining about the services. Keep in minds this is Korean food served by Koreans. You can't expect then to be the way most places are now people coming to ask you if you like your food while your mouth is full. If yiu need help they are always gracious enough to make your visit a memorable one as far as you nice to them. We always have such a great meal at this place. We come early morning because is quiet. Korean pancake is always a must. We tried the pork bone soup worth every bite super tasty. The lady who helped us this time she was very nice, but I don't care the food is always good.

It was our first time eating at San Soo Gab San, and it was absolutely phenomenal! The Kalbi was tender and full of flavor, the Bulgogi perfectly marinated, and the Haemul Pajeon (seafood pancake) soft, savory, and packed with seafood and scallions. The real wood charcoal gives everything a deep, smoky flavor that makes the meal unforgettable. The spread of banchan (traditional Korean side dishes) was generous and delicious, and the service was warm and attentive. We also love that they’re one of the few spots on the North Side open until midnight on Friday and Saturday — perfect for a late-night craving. For authentic Korean BBQ in Chicago, San Soo Gab San is a must. We can’t wait to go back!

The best Korean BBQ Experience ive ever had. The banchan is by far the best part of the meal. Language barrier can be an issue at times but no big deal. Must try the fish pancake.

Excellent food! Fresh ingredients! Highly recommended their seafood tofu soup with stir fried pork combo, bbq (beef short ribs, beef brisket), seafood pan cakes. Love the small plates! Kimchi, scallions slides… Delicious! I have to unbutton my pants lol Excellent customer service! Thanks ajuma. Will definitely return! Great atmosphere, it is very clean. Sit comfortably. Downside: no dessert, no smoothies - kids complaints. Has free parking lot, easy to get a parking!

The most outstanding and authentic Korean BBQ restaurant I’ve ever visited so far, and it’s definitely the best choice in Chicago without any question. I ordered marinated sliced beef (bulgogi) and sliced pork belly bacon (sam gyeop sai), and they were both beyond my expectation. Most importantly, they serve more than 20 kinds of free sides for each table no matter how many people you bring with (actually I got 26 kinds of sides). Overall, I did appreciate not just their quality food but also the restaurant ambiance, even though this place is a bit pricy, but it’s still worthy of a visit.
